3 Things to Consider When Designing a Music Classroom

If you are designing a new classroom which will be used to teach music, you will want to make sure that it is built and furnished in a way which produces the best possible sound for the children learning to play instruments. A poorly designed room can result in student's instruments not sounding as good as they otherwise might. However, you will also want to be certain that the noise generated by the musical instruments does not disturb anyone else in the building. Below is a guide to some of the things you can do to design the perfect space for music lessons.

Consider the soft furnishings

When furnishing your music room, you should remember this basic rule: hard and smooth surfaces reflect sound, and soft and rough surfaces absorb it. If your music room features hardwood floors and empty walls, the sound waves produced by student's instruments will bounce directly off of these surfaces and will return into the room. This can create a problem with the volume of the sound waves in the room. It can also create a horrible echo which can make it difficult to distinguish between one note and other during a music lesson. Ideally, the floor of the music room should be carpeted and the walls should feature heavy curtains which will help to absorb sound waves.

Consider the position of the furniture

Another way of breaking up the sound waves created during a music lesson is to think about the position of furniture. If you have tables, bookshelves or chairs in the room, you may wish to arrange them in a way which acts as a barrier to any sound waves as they travel across the room. As the sound waves hit obstacles such as furniture, they will be refracted and reflected in different directions, which will help to reduce the amount of noise pollution and echo in the room.

Consider installing insulation

Many people think that insulation is only used to keep a room warm. However, it is also possible to install acoustic insulation which will absorb sound waves before they escape from a room via the walls, floor or roof. Insulation can help to drastically reduce the amount of noise pollution generated by a room.
